DEMATEL-modified ANP to evaluate internal hospital supply chain performance


Abstract Previous measurement of hospital supply chain performance independently measure the performance groups of patient safety and hospital supply chain efficiency which include clinical care and supporting process efficiency. In fact, these three performance groups relate to one another. The interdependencies among performance groups should be investigated. Moreover, it is necessary to examine which performance aspects included in each group is the most important for improvement. The importance of performance aspects can be determined by designated weights. The weights of performance aspects can help manager select which aspect needs improvement. The interdependencies inform hospital executives how to improve performance properly. This study employs DEMATELmodified ANP to investigate the relationships among performance groups, and calculate weights for performance aspects. DEMATEL is used to examine the causal relationships among performance groups and among performance aspects within each group. The causal relationships are then used to determine weights of performance aspects applying modified ANP. The result of the study shows that the most important aspects of hospital supply chain performance are completeness of treatment, no delay in treatment and clinical care process time. The causal relationships from DEMATEL can also inform the hospital executives that improving no delay in treatment performance can be achieved by improving itself, while to ease an improvement in completeness of treatment and clinical care process time must consider improving other performance aspects relating to them as well.

To analyze causal relationships, and calculate the relative weights among performance aspects, this paper applies the DEMATEL-modified ANP method. Decision making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) is used to solve the interrelationships by describing the causal relationships among the criteria (Cho et al., 2012; Lee et al., 2011; Uygun et al., 2015). DEMATEL is used at the beginning of analysis to determine the causal relationships among performance groups and among performance aspects within each group. The causal relationships can solve the problem of unrealistic interdependencies initiated at the first step of ANP (Lee et al., 2011; Yang & Tzeng, 2011). The causal relationships from can also be used to calculate the relative weights of factors (Yang & Tzeng, 2011). DEMATEL’s total influence matrix is applied to normalize the unweighted supermatrix in the ANP calculation. Later, the relative weights of performance aspects are calculated to determine the important performance aspects to improve. The rest of the paper are organized as follows. Section 2 reflects the hospital supply chain performance aspects of patient safety, clinical care and supporting process efficiency. After that, section 3 declares the problem statements for this study. Then, section 4 describes the combination of DEMATEL and ANP method. In section 4, the application of the combination method to the hospital supply chain and the result of relative weights are presented. Then, section 5 discusses the result and how the relationships and weight can be jointly used to inform managers how to improve the hospital supply chain as well as presents the application of the weighted performance framework to a case of supply chain process in a teaching hospital. Finally, section 6 presents conclusion and possible future researches.
